Bio

Muli Ben-Yehuda is currently the Chief R&D Officer of Lightbits Labs, a company he co-founded in early 2016. Before taking over as Chief R&D Officer, he was the company's Head of Product, Chief Scientist, and before that the company's first CTO. He also serves on the Lightbits Board of Directors.

Muli is a systems researcher and an expert in the areas of machine and I/O virtualization, and software-defined storage. He holds an M.Sc. in Computer Science (summa cum laude) from the Technion -- Israel Institute of Technology and a B.A. (cum laude) from the Open University of Israel. From 2002 until 2012 he held senior research and managerial positions at IBM Research, where he was also an IBM Master Inventor. In 2013 he founded a boutique virtualization and cloud computing consulting company, Hypervisor Technologies and Consulting Ltd, that provided expert consulting services to select clients. From 2014 until 2016 he solved hard cloud computing problems as Stratoscale's Chief Scientist.

Muli has co-authored over forty academic publications and holds over forty-five US patents in such areas as storage, machine and I/O virtualization, cloud computing, and operating system and hypervisor design and implementation. He is one of the inventors of the NVMe/TCP protocol. His code and ideas are included in many operating systems and hypervisors, including the Linux kernel and the Xen and KVM hypervisors. His work on The Turtles Project: Design and Implementation of Nested Virtualization has won the prestigious OSDI Jay Lepreau Best Paper Award and the IBM Research Pat Goldberg Memorial Best Paper Award. Most recently, he and his collaborators have received the ACM SIGARCH/SIGPLAN/SIGOPS ASPLOS 2024 Influential Paper Award for their paper ELI: Bare-Metal Performance for I/O Virtualization.
